If the last year has taught us anything, it is that we need to plan ahead for times when we may not have easy access to the conveniences we have become accustomed to in life.
If you are anything like me, you took for granted that you could pop over to the grocery store and buy things at a moment’s notice whenever you had run out. This expectation left a lot of us without basic supplies we use on a daily basis…like toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, and even food.
As a result of the past year and the continued unrest in the world, I set a goal to work on being prepared for times when the conveniences I rely on are not available.
Part of that is coming up with a way to live without disposable products. Like paper towels.
There are many websites and online stores that specialize in products that are reusable to replace the disposable goods we all love. Websites like Zero Waste have reusable products like towels that roll up like paper towels but are made of flannel. They also have feminine hygiene products like reusable menstrual cups. They are worth a look if this is an area you would like to expand into, but some of them come with a hefty price tag.
If you have basic sewing skills, you can create some of these products on your own, but others are worth the investment to purchase.
I decided to make my own reusable towels to keep on hand if I run out of paper towels. I looked into purchasing them, but when I realized how simple they are to make, compared to how expensive they are to buy, I opted to make my own. I created a downloadable pattern for Etsy if you would like the instructions. You can click here to pop on over to my shop and check out the towels I made.
The bonus of these kinds of preparations is that all of these reusable items cut down on the amount of waste you produce, which is good for your community and for the world. Which just feels good!
I hope we never again see a time when we worry about whether or not we will be able to have food and supplies for our families, but I am working on ensuring that my family will have the things we need. If that unfortunate time comes, I will have the peace of knowing I am prepared.
What things are you working on to make sure you have the things you and your family need?
