Tunisian crochet can seem like a daunting skill to learn, but it is far easier than it looks! The Tunisian Crochet Simple-Stitch is the perfect place to start.
Check out the video below to get started on your Tunisian Crochet journey.
To get started, you will need a Tunisian crochet hook and medium-weight yarn. I used 100% cotton yarn in the video, and as you can see, it likes to separate and lacks flexibility. If you are just getting started, I recommend using a synthetic yarn with some flexibility to make things easier while you learn.
Here are a few things to remember:
- Watch your tension. I have a naturally tight gauge, so this is something I have to be very conscious of when I am working Tunisian crochet. When you are doing the front pass, it can be easy to lose sight of the tension on your loops. But if they aren’t loose enough, it will cause problems during the back pass when you are dropping all of the stitches off the hook.
- Every row is built with a front pass and a back pass. Unlike traditional crochet where each row is worked individually, Tunisian crochet rows are created by picking up all of the stitches and holding them on the hook and then dropping them off the hook in the back pass.
- Each project starts with a foundation row. This row consists of a row of chain stitches, a front pass, and a back pass.
- It’s OK to be a beginner! Everyone starts out a beginner and churns out some not-so-great projects when they start…and that’s completely normal. Rather than focusing on perfection, focus on practicing. Every stitch, every row, and every project are teaching you the things you need to know to move on to the next project and each new skill. Embrace the journey and enjoy the learning process.
