Yarn pumpkins are all the rage! You can use your crochet skills to create this fun crocheted pumpkin decoration as a gift or to liven up your home with this step-by-step video tutorial.

This video tutorial below uses the 3rd Loop Half Double Crochet to create the “striping” on the pumpkin and it is one of my favorite stitches to add texture and stripes to a project.

I have included the written instructions below the video.

Let’s dig right in. Grab your hook and yarn and let’s stitch!

Directions:

  • Row 1 of the base: Create a magic circle with 12 sc. Tighten the magic circle to the size of a finger. Join with a sl st, ch 1
  • Row 2 of the base: 2 sc in each stitch around, join with a sl st Body of the pumpkin:
  • Chain 25
  • SC into the 2nd stitch from the hook
  • HDC into each stitch to the 2nd to the last stitch
  • SC into the last stitch
  • Sl st into the starting stitch on the circle
  • Sl st into the next stitch of the circle
  • Ch 1, turn.
  • * SC into the SC stitch from the previous row (not into the sl st)
  • 3rd Loop HDC (3LHDC) into each stitch to the last stitch
  • SC into the last stitch
  • Ch 1, turn. -SC into the 1st st,
  • 3LHDC into each st to the last st
  • SC into the last st
  • Sl st into the starting st
  • Sl st into the next st of the circle
  • Ch 1, turn
  • Repeat from * until you have used every stitch in the circle –
  • After you have slip stitched into the last stitch of the circle, finish one last row to the top of the pumpkin.
  • Fasten off, leaving a yard of yarn
  • Use a yarn needle to sew the two ends of the pumpkin body together
  • Feed the tail through the circle to the opening (leave the tail sticking out)
  • Use poly-fil to stuff the pumpkin
  • Using the yarn tail and needle, feed the yarn around the opening and cinch the opening shut.
  • Using the yarn and needle, feed the yarn back and forth from bottom to top and top to bottom, catching each stitch around the circle, and pulling the top and bottom of the pumpkin towards each other.
  • Fasten off the yarn, ensuring it is secured
  • Hot glue a cinnamon stick into the center of the circle
  • Decorate

Now you have your very own crocheted pumpkin!!

This pumpkin can be made with a variety of stitches including the Herringbone Stitch. The key is to find a stitch that creates the lines you would see on a pumpkin to make it more “realistic”.

Hello lovely! Let's get all of the labels out the way so we can talk... I'm a daughter, sister, mother, entrepreneur, writer, podcaster, college graduate, and passionate crafter who has survived raising special needs children, a child with cancer, a heart condition, and becoming a widow at a young age...whew! Made it. But here's the important part... I teach women how to use crochet as a creative outlet for self-care so that they can reduce anxiety and depression, be more mindful and present, and experience joy from their lives. What does that have to do with crafting? EVERYTHING!! Learning creative skills is a great way to care for yourself, activates the creative centers in your brain and lets ideas start to flow, builds self-esteem and confidence, and relieves anxiety and depression symptoms. YEAH, crocheting, knitting, and sewing can do ALL of that! I firmly believe that people WANT to spend time caring for themselves through creativity, but life often gets in the way and the desire to learn gets put on the back burner. Here is your opportunity to finally learn these essential skills and transform your passion into purpose, care for yourself, and feel better! So happy you are here! xo — Lavena
