Having time to crochet can be a challenge. One way to remove the obstacle of time is to make crocheting a portable activity that you can do on the go.

In a few simple steps, you can have your crochet bag set up and ready for your next outing. You can say goodbye to wasted time commuting by train or bus or sitting idly at the doctor’s office. And no more boredom while waiting for kids to get out of school or finish practice.

Making crochet portable gives you the freedom to work on your project wherever you are, allowing you to maximize the time available to you each day.

So, get ready to finish that project that has been waiting for you!

Making time to crochet

Why Portable is Better

I have had many crochet bags over the years. Each bag traveled with me to doctor’s appointments, to the hospital where I stayed with my daughter, and on road trips to visit to friends and family.

I love to crochet, but my life has not always been conducive to setting aside time to work on my projects.

So, as I was sitting in the car one day, I found myself thinking about a pair of mittens I was crocheting, wishing I had them with me. When I got home, I grabbed an empty purse out of my closet and put my mitten project in the bag. I started bringing it along everywhere I went. I was able to complete the mittens more quickly than normal because I had so much more time to spend on them.

Unknowingly, I had discovered the secret to having more time to crochet.

How to Make Your Project Portable

You only need a few basics to get started with portable crochet. Once you try it out…and fall in love with crocheting on the go, you can add to this list.

Bag/Purse

This can be an old purse like I started with. You can also use a canvas bag with a couple of interior pockets and a large open space.

I am currently using a bag I crocheted to be my crochet bag. You can find the pattern for it here.

If I’m working on a blanket or larger project, I have a larger bag that I use. But the crocheted bag is perfect for a smaller project.

But try to avoid anything too large and hard to carry. The idea is to make things easier for you so you don’t want to complicate things by carrying a massive bag around.

Tool Kit

I purchased a pouch for my crochet tools so I can have easy access to the hooks I will need for the project, scissors, stitch markers, and a yarn needle.

You can find a variety of pouches and cases online, or you can repurpose an old makeup bag, pencil case, or even a Ziploc baggy. You can even make your own!

But when you’re first starting out, don’t go out and spend a bunch of money on finding all the latest trends. Keep it simple. Then, you can upgrade as you go.

Basic supplies needed for your kit:

  • Hooks
  • Small scissors
  • Yarn Needle
  • Stitch Markers
  • Tape measure

Don’t Forget Your Pattern

One last piece of advice for packing your crochet go bag. If you are using a pattern, put a printed copy in your bag.

So this way, even if you lose cell service, or don’t have access to the Internet, you will still be able to work on your project. In fact, losing service makes the perfect time to crochet with no distractions. Bringing along your pattern ensures you don’t miss out.

Now Get Stitching On the Go!

That’s it! That’s all you need to get started crocheting on the go. No more feeling like you never have time to work on your project because you are out and about and your project is waiting at home.

Now you can use the time you have when you have it.

It’s your turn! Leave me a comment letting me know how you crochet on the go or DM me on Instagram anytime. I love to hear from you.

Happy Stitching!

Hello lovely! Let's get all of the labels out the way so we can talk... I'm a daughter, sister, mother, entrepreneur, writer, podcaster, college graduate, and passionate crafter who has survived raising special needs children, a child with cancer, a heart condition, and becoming a widow at a young age...whew! Made it. But here's the important part... I teach women how to use crochet as a creative outlet for self-care so that they can reduce anxiety and depression, be more mindful and present, and experience joy from their lives. What does that have to do with crafting? EVERYTHING!! Learning creative skills is a great way to care for yourself, activates the creative centers in your brain and lets ideas start to flow, builds self-esteem and confidence, and relieves anxiety and depression symptoms. YEAH, crocheting, knitting, and sewing can do ALL of that! I firmly believe that people WANT to spend time caring for themselves through creativity, but life often gets in the way and the desire to learn gets put on the back burner. Here is your opportunity to finally learn these essential skills and transform your passion into purpose, care for yourself, and feel better! So happy you are here! xo — Lavena
